School Funding

The School of Mathematical Sciences awards several full scholarships each year. These cover 100% of tuition fees and provide a UKRI standard stipend. We offer two kinds of PhDs:

  • "Standard" PhD:
    • Research phase begins immediately.
    • Need an MSc to apply.
  • "Integrated" PhD:
    • Start with 1 taught year, equivalent to an MSc.
    • Only need a BSc to apply.

To apply:

  • Speak to your prospective supervisor in advance. It is helpful to name them on the form!
  • Put in an application.
    • Programme Type: Research
    • Search Text: math
    • Select either PhD Mathematical Sciences or Integrated PhD Mathematical Sciences as appropriate.
  • Typically one interview.

Funding is decided separately. We will ask you during your interview if you wish to apply for funding. Decisions are typically made in February. Places are extremely limited and competitive.

Centers for Doctoral Training

Southampton is linked to two CDTs:

Both offer full scholarships and a slightly increased stipend. However, not all supervisors have projects on these CDTs. If you have a supervisor in mind, talk to them to find out whether these schemes are appropriate. If not, you can apply blind to either programme and choose your supervisor at a later time.

Other Sources

There are various other funding options:

  • Some supervisors have independent sources of funding (e.g. grants).
  • Independent bodies can offer scholarships or loans for PhDs (see here for a summary).
  • PhDs can be self-funded.
